Bebe's interpretation
When Jesus was baptized by John in the Jordan River, He witnessed the heavens open and the Holy Spirit descend. In His tenderness toward Jesus, God the Father reveals His character. He describes Jesus as beloved and says that He is well pleased with Him. The love that God has for His own Son is fundamental to who He is. It also adds to the heartbreak of God's sacrifice of sending Jesus to die for the sins of humanity.
First of all, Christ represents the human race as a whole. He was to redeem us from the curse of the Law by becoming the curse for us. It must be noted that Christ did not only accomplish this by dying on the cross for us and taking on Himself the punishment that we deserve but also by living a sinless life to which we are unable to live so that His righteousness could be imputed to us.
Second, Christ was to be anointed as God's heavenly High Priest. It was required that Christ be washed in water and anointed in oil. At that moment, as the Lord was immersed in the water, washed by John, and anointed with the Oil of the Holy Spirit who rested upon Him as a dove, the very Voice of God was heard calling to Him.
