James 4:4
James 4:4
Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
Throughout the previous verses of James' letter, he has been blunt: His readers have lived according to worldly wisdom. Rather than relying on human resources to provide all the good we need, the wisdom of heaven encourages us to rely on God for all our needs. According to James, Christians who continue to live according to the wisdom of the world, driven by envy and ambition, seeking what they want above all else, are acting in opposition to God's wisdom. Certainly, these are tough words for any believer to hear. Nevertheless, we must remember that God admonishes those whom He loves. As we read the next verse, we see the same Holy Spirit, who dwells among us, showing jealousy towards us. It is because He desires to make every believer more and more like our dear Lord Jesus. All who submit to the Holy Spirit's leading in humility are longing for more grace from Him. It is time for us to search our hearts. In God's power, let us turn from any worldly practices that would grieve the Holy Spirit who lives in us. Our hearts should be cleansed of all pride and ungodly lusts. As we draw near to God in humility of spirit, remember that he died in order to bring us near to Him.
