Proverbs 29:23
Proverbs 29:23
A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit.
All humans have this sense of self-importance called ego. A healthy ego gives a man confidence in his abilities and he is inspired to achieve his goals and work hard. A man with a healthy sense of self knows to demonstrate his strengths without being arrogant, welcome other people’s opinion and carries himself with pride without boasting. However, ego can become unhealthy when one feels superior to others and is self-opinionated. When one is proud, he tends to think too highly of himself and be condescending toward others. Pride sets in when we begin to glory in what we possess and in our reputation. It gives rise to the feeling of self sufficiency and makes one appropriate to himself the glory that belongs to God. A proud man puts himself in a competition against God and that is why He opposes them. Pride breeds rebellion and hates to submit to authority. It leads to being self-serving, self-interested, and self-promoting. It is abominable in the sight of God. The saying that ‘pride goes before a fall' describes the fate of the proud. However, being humble connotes submission to God and His will. In response to their submission, God ensures that they are exalted and honored in due time.
James 4:10
Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.
James 3:9
With the tongue, we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness.
Luke 22:26
But the one who is greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like one who serves.
Proverbs 22:4
The reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life.
