Proverbs 22:6
Proverbs 22:6
Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
The rigors of bringing up children in the 21st century are nothing compared to any other time in history. Yet, we can still find the ancient path that provides answers to our headaches. The recommended standard for getting your kids to live right in whatever century is to train them. That’s the onus on every parent. But the problem remains that many parents either don’t understand the concept, or they’re not fully applying it. First, training a child can only be accomplished by using the most valid manual – God’s word. When we rely on the wisdom of God to teach our children right from wrong, we’re on track. Humans can be biased in every matter, but applying the unbiased word of God is the safest path. Second, when you know what God expects you to teach your children, you must also be committed to the process. We can see a summary of that in the unfortunate example of Eli in 1 Samuel 3:13. God said, “… I am about to punish his house forever, for the iniquity that he knew, because his sons were blaspheming God, and he did not restrain them.” God punished Eli and his sons because of Eli’s failure to restrain them. Discipline is necessary when it comes to children. Sadly, most parents don’t even realize that “to train” means “to discipline”. And to discipline means to impose order on someone, to train someone by instruction and practice, and to punish someone in order to (re)gain control. This doesn’t call for brutal excesses but an awareness that discipline may not always be pleasant for the child. Proverbs 22:15 says, “Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline drives it far from him.” A parent must learn proper and acceptable discipline for their children. In doing so, you show your child the way they should live their entire lives.
Proverbs 1:8
My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
Proverbs 29:15
The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.
Leviticus 20:9
And he that curseth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death.
Proverbs 19:26
He that wasteth his father, and chaseth away his mother, is a son that causeth shame, and bringeth reproach.
