1 Thessalonians 5:20
1 Thessalonians 5:20
Despise not prophesyings. Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.
There is much debate in the Christian world today, especially on the topic of spiritual gifts such as prophecy and speaking in tongues. However, many people seem to fall on one of two extremes when it comes to these topics. Either they believe that we should have nothing to do with these gifts or that we should just indulge in them and believe in all that comes from them. However, neither of these is the view that the Bible takes. As these verses say, we should not despise prophesying. However, we should prove all things and hold fast to what is good. This simply means that we should not fight against prophecy as a whole, but we should hold prophecy up to the truth that is in Scripture and test it so that we can prove it to be true or false. Above all, we should hold fast to what is good, and God will lead us in the right direction. When we truly hold fast to the truth that God has given us, seeking His guidance every step of the way, we cannot go wrong.
Proverbs 1:5
A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels.
Proverbs 8:11
For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.
1 Peter 1:17
And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear:
Proverbs 10:21
The lips of the righteous feed many: but fools die for want of wisdom.
