James 4:10
James 4:10
Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.
This verse tells us how to behave ourselves towards the Lord and what He would reward us in return. As disciples of Christ, we know the Lord is sovereign and has control over all things. When things don’t go as we expected, however, we often feel frustrated, anxious, and even angry. When we feel we need to have control over our lives, we have put ourselves before God. When we fix our eyes on our plan, our desires, and our achievements, we have blinded ourselves from God’s plan, God’s desires, and God’s greatness. Jesus Christ gave up his life to obey God’s plan. He humbled himself before God and put God’s will first. The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, also lives in us. Humility is not thinking less of ourselves but thinking of ourselves less. It is living in light of who God is and who we are. God is the Creator and Sustainer of the universe. All we have are gifts from God. Without Him, we have nothing. We will always come up short on our own, but we can always rely on the Lord.
Proverbs 22:4
The reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life.
Proverbs 16:19
Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.
Proverbs 29:23
A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit.
1 Corinthians 1:28
God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are.
