Bebe's interpretation
In the face of opposition and persecution, Timothy was to carry out his ministry without fear or shame. In this verse, Paul encouraged him to boldly utilize the gifts of preaching that he had gained from God and serve others.
God has given each of us unique gifts to build up the body of Christ, namely, power, love, and a sound mind. There are times when we hear God's calling, but we may be reluctant to follow because we are afraid of failure or discomfort. Satan, "as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour" (1 Peter 5:8). Why does a lion roar? To paralyze its prey with fear. Satan knows that if he can deceive us into being afraid of him, fear will control our lives instead of faith. Thus, when we experience fear, we must recognize that it is from Satan, not from God.
When we use the gifts God has given us, we will find that God has also given us the power we need to accomplish all the tasks. God's power helps us overcome every obstacle. God also gives us love. Love wins in the battle of evil, so no matter what we do, we should do with love. Last but not least, God gives us a sound mind. To be an effective leader, we must exercise self-discipline and keep a tight rein on our selfish desires. God has made His power, love, and discipline available to us through the Holy Spirit. Like Paul and Timothy, we can rely on the Holy Spirit to give us the courage to share our personal faith in Jesus Christ as our Lord Savior and pursue whatever He has called us to do.
