Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances? This verse from Colossians 2:20 challenges us to reconsider the way we live. If we have died with Christ and been raised to new life, why do we continue to live according to the patterns of this world? Birthdays often serve as a reminder that time is precious and that we are called to live in the freedom Christ offers, not bound by the ways of the world. Our new life in Christ calls us to a higher standard—a life that reflects His righteousness and holiness. As we celebrate another year, let us evaluate whether we are living according to the world’s standards or the freedom and joy that comes with living in Christ. Our world often pulls us in many directions, encouraging us to conform to its values of success, appearance, and materialism. But Christ calls us to live by a different standard, one of love, humility, and service. As we look ahead to another year, let this verse remind us that we are no longer bound by the “rudiments of the world,” but are free to live according to God’s kingdom values. We have been given a new identity in Christ, and as we live out that identity, we bear witness to the transformative power of the Gospel in our lives.
