Ecclesiastes 7:1
Ecclesiastes 7:1
A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth.
A good name is a valuable asset that far exceeds material wealth. This verse highlights the importance of living a life that is worthy of honor, respect, and integrity. On a birthday, it is a moment to reflect on how we have lived, the reputation we have cultivated, and the impact we have made on others. A good name is built not by wealth, but by the character we demonstrate through our actions, words, and choices. It’s about how we treat others, whether we are kind, honest, and faithful. As we grow older, we leave behind a legacy, and a good name ensures that we are remembered not for what we owned, but for who we were. Birthdays are an opportunity to contemplate the legacy we are creating, to reassess our values, and to commit to living in such a way that our reputation reflects our commitment to truth, love, and integrity. Furthermore, the contrast between birth and death in this verse points to the fulfillment of a life well-lived. The day of death, though somber, represents the completion of a life lived in accordance with purpose and faith. It reminds us to value every day we are given and to make it count for something greater than ourselves. A life of wisdom, kindness, and honor is more precious than anything material.
