Isaiah 5:22
Isaiah 5:22
Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine and champions at mixing drinks.
The Bible continues to warn against the prideful attitude of those who take pride in their drinking abilities. “Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine and champions at mixing drinks,” Proverbs declares, showing that such self-promotion is not wise. It calls out the attitude of those who celebrate excess and indulgence, warning that those who make a habit of drunkenness will ultimately face negative consequences. The call is not only to abstain from drinking but to resist the culture of celebration around alcohol and excess. The Bible is clear that indulging in alcohol, especially in excess, does not bring lasting joy or fulfillment; instead, it leads to destruction. As the passage points out, the “drunkard and glutton will come to poverty,” a stark reminder that indulgence ultimately drains one's resources, energy, and life purpose. Excessive drinking leads to laziness, irresponsibility, and a lack of discipline, which leads to financial and personal ruin. These consequences are inevitable when one allows indulgence to take control.
