Proverbs 10:19
Proverbs 10:19
In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise.
There is great wisdom in refraining from excessive words. In a world where communication is constant and often overwhelming, this verse calls us to exercise restraint in our speech. The “multitude of words” does not guarantee wisdom or truth, and often, too many words lead to sin. Speaking less is a mark of wisdom, as it allows us to choose our words more carefully and to avoid saying things that we might later regret. It also fosters a deeper level of listening and understanding, as we give others the opportunity to speak and process their thoughts. By exercising restraint in our speech, we can avoid the pitfalls of gossip, slander, and unnecessary conflict. This verse teaches that silence can often be more powerful than a flood of words, allowing us to respond with grace and wisdom when necessary. In practice, this means being mindful of our words, speaking only when necessary, and considering the impact our words will have on others before we speak. The wise person knows when to speak and when to remain silent, trusting in God’s guidance in both moments.
Psalms 19:14
Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.
Matthew 12:34
O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
Proverbs 15:28
The heart of the righteous studieth to answer, but the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things.
Proverbs 10:32
The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable, but the mouth of the wicked speaketh frowardness.
