Proverbs 20:1
Proverbs 20:1
Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging, and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.
In the Book of Proverbs, we also find the warning that “wine is a mocker” and “strong drink is raging,” with a stern reminder that those who are deceived by it are “not wise.” This warning serves as a reminder of the deceptive nature of alcohol and intoxicating substances. In a world that often glamorizes drinking and encourages its social acceptance, the Bible offers a different perspective. Alcohol may offer temporary satisfaction or relief, but its long-term effects are destructive. It mocks wisdom and replaces true fulfillment with an artificial, fleeting high. This passage calls us to recognize that those who choose drunkenness as their source of joy are making a foolish decision that leads to emptiness. The key takeaway is that alcohol, in excess, can easily distort our judgment, impair our spiritual senses, and separate us from the true peace that comes from following God's ways. The Bible encourages believers to live sober-minded and to seek fulfillment in the things that truly satisfy the soul—wisdom, understanding, and a relationship with God.
Titus 2:3

Proverbs 23:20
Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh.
Isaiah 5:11
Woe to those who rise early in the morning to run after their drinks, who stay up late at night till they are inflamed.
Proverbs 23:21
For the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, and slumber will clothe them with rags.
