Many Christians of the early church suffered persecution, and much of Paul's teaching addressed the abuse and torture they endured. Persecution is still prevalent in our society today. While the methods of torture may differ, the enemies of our Lord Jesus Christ continue to undermine our faith. As a result of our faith, we may be personally attacked. We may feel discouraged by what is happening in the world. Life may knock us down in every possible way. In this verse, the Apostle Paul reminds us that, regardless of what is thrown at us and what we might have to suffer for the sake of Christ, the Lord never leaves us, and we can always find strength in Him. Life's trials and troubles are not an end but an encounter with God's extravagant love. It is that love that makes pain bearable and suffering joyful. The Lord, in His loving refuge, gives us the peace that enables us to understand the purposes of life so that we can walk in stillness and joy in spite of pain and noise. God never promised us that following Jesus would be easy. In fact, the Scriptures are very upfront about the difficulties we may experience. He did promise, however, that we would never be alone. Regardless of how hard the struggle may seem at times, remember that God will never abandon you, nor will He let you fall. He is always with you.
Dear Heavenly Father, You are the source of my strength and my loving refuge. Thank You for always being with me and giving me a purpose - to glorify You. Every hardship you put me through is an opportunity for me to become stronger. Nothing can separate me from You. Give me strength to carry out Your will today and to live in Your perfect peace. In Jesus's name I pray. Amen.
Revelation 2:10
Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried.
Luke 6:22
Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you.
Acts 5:41
And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name.
John 15:25
But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.
