Inspiration
Paul is well-known for his conflict with Jewish religious leaders concerning the issue of Jesus Christ. He has specifically taught that salvation cannot be obtained by obedience to the law. In order to suppress Paul's teaching, Jewish religious leaders have repeatedly attempted to kill him. Thus, Paul is deeply and continually saddened by the plight of his people, the Jews.
The Old Testament uses characters such as Abraham and David as examples of how faith alone, rather than race, parentage, nationality, education, morality, or anything else, justifies and declares a person righteous before God. Paul emphasizes that for a sinner to be restored to fellowship with the Father, they must have faith alone. This is impossible through the Mosaic Law or any legalistic practice.
Because of Israel's partial blindness, they did not recognize their great salvation through faith in Christ. As a result, this chosen apostle of God suffered deep distress, deep sorrow, and ongoing anguish. Whether Jew or Gentile, our hearts are filled with the same desperate grief and unwavering pain for the lost.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, we are thankful for the ministry of Paul, for the magnificent Romans treatise, and for the clear explanation of every aspect of our great salvation. Thank You for Your promise that salvation is not based on works of the Law, race, nationality, education, or anything else, but rather on faith in Christ Jesus. Allow me to share the good news of the gospel with others as I have a compassionate heart for the lost.
In Jesus's name I pray. Amen.
