The prophet Micah begins verse 18 with a play on his own name: “Who is a God like you?” Micah's question is one that other nations – Egyptians, Babylonians, Assyrians –also asked as a way of praising their gods. Yet Micah by no means implies that there are other gods. The one and only God is incomparable because of His forgiving character! The Lord our God is a God who pardons iniquity and forgives sins. Through Jesus Christ, all of our sins have been cast out and forever forgiven! He does not retain His anger forever because He delights in showing mercy to His people. Regardless of who we are or what we have done, we have been redeemed from sins as children of God. When we turn from our sins and mistakes and turn to the Lord, we can count on His mercy to forgive us and make us new. Micah proclaimed this truth to a nation that had gone astray. It is helpful to remember that sometimes we are just like stubborn Israel. God brought them back! What He did for them, He will also do for us. Forgiving, compassionate, and delighting in mercy. This is the God whom we serve and worship!
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of salvation and for creating me anew in Christ. Remind me every day that my sins have been forgiven, and they no longer hold me captive. Only You have the power to forgive our sins, and I praise You for that. Please help me confess my sins to You because I know that You are delighted when I do, and You are always willing to forgive and show mercy. Thank You, Father, for Your mercy and unconditional love. In Jesus's name I pray. Amen.
Genesis 50:20
But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.
John 8:7
So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.
1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Luke 6:37
Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven.
