In Romans 5, Paul begins a new section of his letter to the Christians in Rome. He has concluded, in chapters 1 through 4, that following the works of the law of Moses cannot make one right with God. Paul now proceeds to demonstrate that those who have been justified in God's sight have peace with Him. God has made permanent peace with us through Christ. Paul's logical argument throughout Romans' early chapters leaves no doubt that everyone is a sinner and at odds with God. In God's eyes, they are guilty and are therefore eternally separated from their Creator, for the penalty of sin is death. A glorious truth, however, goes along with this devastating knowledge: Christ is the gift of God, and through Him, we are given eternal life. Our justification is based on faith. Faith makes us righteous. It is through faith in Christ that we have peace with God, which means that rather than being at enmity with God through sin, we are at peace with God through faith in Him. By faith in Christ, we have been placed in an eternal union with God rather than eternal separation from God as a result of sin.
Dear Heavenly Father, it is wonderful to know that I am at peace with You through faith in Christ Jesus. My sin should have provoked Your wrath, but Your only begotten Son took the punishment I deserved because He willingly took it upon Himself. By doing this, He ensured that I would be at peace with You for the rest of my life. Please accept my sincere thanks for Your grace and mercy. In Jesus's name I pray. Amen.
Romans 5:18
Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.
Galatians 3:6
Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.
Romans 4:5
But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
Galatians 2:16
Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ.
