Inspiration
Lust is indeed the origin of sin. The seven deadliest sins can be traced to this inordinate craving or desire for something that is not ours. We all desire a better and more comfortable life. We want the things that make life more comfortable: wealth, valuable properties, luxurious cars, well-paying jobs or businesses, happy families and many more. It is agreeable to say that the need to acquire these things keeps us motivated.
A tendency to become envious, however, sets in when a subordinate or a contemporary gets what we want and hope for. Instead of rejoicing and thanking God for the blessing, we begin to resent the person who has been blessed. We will look for reasons why the person didn’t deserve it and why the blessing should have been ours. In our hearts, we start to feel inferior, intimidated, and threatened by what the other person has. We begin to see the person as competition and look for ways to outdo him/her. This feeling of envy is subtle and if not checked can open the door to other sinful thoughts and actions.
As believers, we must examine ourselves and look out for signs of envy. Remember Cain (Genesis 4:1-16)? Don't let envy destroy you before you destroy it. Learn to be genuinely happy for others while we anticipate our moment of joy.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the abundance of blessings I have received from You. You know everything that's going on in my mind and my heart. Please help me deal with every thought of envy. Help me not to compare my success with others because You know what is best for me and Your love for each of us is unique. I pray that You bless me and grant the desires of my heart as they align with Your will for my life.
In Jesus's name I pray. Amen.
