One of the seven deadliest and abominable sins before God is pride. It seems to have existed before the foundations of the Earth. It is known to have led to the destruction of many and to be the underlying cause of the downfall of the great. It is usually characterized by feelings of arrogance, inability to submit to authority, self sufficiency and self dependence. It is an expression of self. The deceitfulness of pride contributed to the fall of man in the garden of Eden which has caused humanity suffering and pain. We all have shown pride at some time in our lives, for a variety of reasons, regardless of age or status. Because of the slyness of pride, believers can also be caught in its web if we lose our guard. Unless we take the time to reflect and identify the signs of pride, we can accidentally become entangled and let pride rule our actions and decisions. We can detect pride in our lives when we begin to see ourselves as superior to others, develop a sense of ingratitude, the need to be the center of attraction, become too particular about our physical appearance, reject good advice, become critical of people better than us and many more. We can overcome pride by taking heed of the thoughts that run through our minds. We should not think so highly of ourselves, and practice humility as God has warned us in this verse.
Dear Heavenly Father, You have shown me the only way to freedom from self and personal dominion over sin through the way of salvation. By Your authority, may I gain control over every thought of pride in my mind. Help me identify every sign of pride in my life and receive grace to overcome them. Thank You for warning me that pride brings shame while humility brings wisdom. Please help me to take charge and subdue the workings of pride in my life. My boast is in the knowledge of the Lord and I am graced with the ability to submit to His authority and wear the cloak of humility. In Jesus’s name I pray. Amen.
1 Peter 2:6
Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.
1 Peter 5:6
Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:
Psalms 149:4
For the Lord taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation.
