Having the right balance of every ingredient is always the master chef’s secret. So also in life, the word of God teaches that all things must be in moderation. In our verse today, Paul teaches a balance that is very much needed for every believer in Christ. It is the call to be godly as we keep a content heart with us. Keeping things in balance is the key to every believer's contentment. It is not so difficult to get distracted by the affairs of life. Just as Jesus made the remarkable statement about how we cannot lay our hands on the plough while simultaneously looking back, this is the bitter truth. While we may be in the world and rightly have needs and aspirations, they must never be powerful enough to have our heads spinning backward like Lot’s wife. The call to godliness is the call to forfeit pleasures that lead nowhere. It is not necessarily to detest pleasure but rather to wave goodbye to processes that oppose the life of godliness. The art of contentment is the disposition of being satisfied with the present while not being mediocre in thinking. We must find the right balance to be impactful in the world while maintaining the tag “ambassadors of Christ”. Godliness with contentment is the way of life that keeps the balance between being in the world and not being of the world.
Dear Heavenly Father, teach me to know Your ways and to walk in them. Teach me to be content with what I have while I work and trust in Your ability to make things better. Help me not to fall into the snare of trying to be rich even when You are not in agreement with my methods. Help me hold on to Your will and walk according to the plan You have laid down for me. Give me the grace to keep my focus on You and not be enticed by the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh, and the pride of life. In Jesus’s name I pray. Amen.
Proverbs 19:23
The fear of the Lord tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied.
Psalms 22:26
The meek shall eat and be satisfied.
1 Timothy 6:8
And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.
Proverbs 30:8
Give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me.
