Compassion is a deep awareness of people’s sufferings. But it doesn’t stop there. A compassionate person also seeks to help. Compassion is the catalyst for astronomically good gestures just as Jesus exhibited. When Jesus saw the great crowd, the Bible says He was full of compassion. This compassion also spurred Him to heal their sick. Can we see this kind of compassion today? Even in Christian circles, can we find people with such a level of compassion? Compassion is the call of every Christian. It’s the force that drives us to do the will of God. The will of God is that no man perish. It’s the will of God that no person be yoked to the burden of sin and its deadly consequences. Compassion is the life force of evangelism, healing the sick, making the lame walk, opening blind eyes, feeding the poor, loving your neighbor as yourself, etc. Everything is motivated by compassion, which is energized by love. Now we see why God commands us to love one another. Without love, there’s no compassion that will lead us to do the good works God created us to do (Ephesians 2:10). It’s instructive to know that the same compassion Jesus showed to the crowd is what is expected of believers. You have received a new spirit that is compassionate to the lost and dying world, that you may save the lost and show them the love of God.
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for Your love that has been poured into my heart by the Holy Spirit. You are love and Your Spirit is that of love. I pray that You give me strength to allow Your compassion to flow through me to others who are in need. I want to do good things for people. Please energize me with compassion and the grace to do the good works You continually inspire in my heart. I want to do the works that Jesus did. Please help me to be all that You want me to be. In Jesus’s name I pray. Amen.
