Parents have the important job of teaching their children important things like how to be good people, how to handle life, and how to follow God. Children are expected to follow their parents' teachings and live accordingly. One of the ten commandments God handed down to Israel during their sojourn through the wilderness is to honor their parents. This implies that obedience to the instructions of parents is tantamount to obeying God. This is so because in the hierarchy of authority after God, parents are the next in line a child must respect and honor.
When we honor God by obeying His commandments, we provoke His blessings on our lives. By adhering to our parents' instructions, we receive blessings from them. If Christian parents want to produce godly offspring that God seeks in every home, they must be intentional about nurturing and teaching children to submit to their authority. For children to enjoy prosperous and purposeful lives, parents must commit to training them in the ways of the Lord. There are several Bible characters who led godly lives and became useful for God's agenda in their generation. Children are thereby encouraged not to rebel against the discipline and instructions of their parents but to embrace them for their own good.

Dear Heavenly Father, help me to honor my parents and listen to their wise instruction, knowing that by doing so, I am obeying You. I pray that You would give me a heart that is open and receptive to the guidance and correction of my parents and that You would bless me with wisdom and discernment as I seek to live a life that is pleasing to You. Thank You for the gift of parents who love and care for me. Please help me to honor them in all that I do.
