Philippians 2 is about spiritual unity and having joy in serving others. Many people, even Christians, live only to make a good impression on others or to please themselves. In this verse, Paul asks us to never act from the motives of our own vanity but rather from the perspective of humility and thinking of others as better than ourselves. Humility brings unity, while selfishness brings discord. When we focus on our selfish desires, we lose focus on God and His desire for us to serve others. When we work together, caring for the problems of others as if they are ours, we demonstrate Christ's example of humility, and we experience unity. Jesus is the perfect example of putting others first, as He died on the cross for our sins so we wouldn't have to face eternal death. Despite the risk of not getting recognition for our efforts, followers of the Lord should have a humble attitude as they serve. Before God, we are all sinners and saved only by God's grace. Instead of judging one another's character, we should live like Christ - set aside selfishness and meet each other's needs. Are you selfishly clinging to your own needs, or are you willing to serve?
Dear Heavenly Father, bless me with a spirit of humility and a heart of service. Keep me away from prideful attitudes and selfish desires, for they separate me from You and the people around me. Teach me to be humble and treat others with love and respect. Please help me develop the true humility that Jesus displayed as an example and always seek to meet the needs of others. In Jesus's name I pray. Amen.
James 4:5
Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?
Galatians 5:26
Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.
Proverbs 24:1
Be not thou envious against evil men, neither desire to be with them.
Proverbs 14:30
A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones.
