The psalmist describes the Lord as the Creator of heaven and earth in this verse. Travelers used this passage on their way to Jerusalem. The journey might be dangerous, as bandits or hostile men might hide in the hills and attack them. In such situations, God is the ultimate source of confidence. Since such a powerful God was at his side, he had no need to fear anything. Three times per year, the men of Israel would travel to Jerusalem to celebrate the feasts of the Lord and to worship their God at the Holy Temple. The Holy Temple was located at the top of Mount Zion. Their sole source of assistance was the Creator of heaven and earth, the Lord. Their strength and help were evident. All of their needs and protection were provided by the Lord. It is this same God who provides us with assistance. Not only would He pay the price for the sins of Israel, but also for the sins of all mankind. There is no need to trek up the mountainous track to Jerusalem three times a year in order to ask for forgiveness and mercy. Our hearts are filled with the Spirit of God, and through the sacrifice of Christ's blood, we have direct access to God's throne room at all times.
Dear Heavenly Father, You are the one I turn to for help. In my life, You are the only true source of redemption, power, comfort, encouragement, hope, and excellence. I ask for guidance in knowing Your will and choosing Your will for my life. Thank You that my ever-present help during troubling times comes from You. The blood of Christ now grants me access to Your throne of grace for mercy in times of need. Thank You for being faithful to Your people throughout the ages and to me throughout my life. In Jesus's name I pray. Amen.
