Genesis Chapter 5 begins with a brief reminder of God's creation of humanity. It then provides a specific genealogy of Adam's descendants through Seth and subsequent generations until Noah. This verse confirms the claim made in Genesis 1:27 that God created mankind in His image. Also, it conveys the idea that humankind is fundamentally different from all other animals. Although God is Spirit, He intentionally became born into the human race, dressed in flesh and made in the image of fallen man, yet without sin. It was God's intention to become part of that generation from Adam in order to save His people from their sins and redeem a race of sinners from eternal death. Through the Seed of the woman, which was to be passed down from Adam and Seth to Enoch and Noah and then on down to the great patriarchs, God promised to crush the head of the serpent. Ultimately, Jesus, the perfect Son of Man and incarnate Son of God, would fulfill the plan and purpose of God for mankind by governing the earth with His sovereign authority.
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for providing us with the Bible and the fascinating plan of redemption that traced the lineage of Christ through Adam, Seth, Noah, Abraham, and Israel. Thank You for making man in Your own image and for saving us from our sins by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, even in the face of sin and its terrible consequences. I pray to You that my family, I, and my unborn generations are forever fruitful for Your purposes. In Jesus's name I pray. Amen.
