In contrast, the lips of a fool are destructive, often speaking harshly or without thought. The fool’s words “swallow up himself,” meaning that his words often bring him harm and shame, as they reveal his lack of wisdom and understanding. A wise person, however, uses their words to build up rather than tear down, to uplift rather than criticize. This verse calls us to be intentional with our words, speaking with grace and wisdom, and avoiding foolish speech that brings harm.
