Jesus compares the relationship between Himself and His followers to the relationship between Himself and the Father. Just as He lives because of the Father, so too will those who "feed" on Him—those who receive Him into their lives—live because of Him. This verse emphasizes the life-giving power of Jesus. To feed on Him means to fully embrace His sacrifice, to depend on Him for spiritual nourishment, and to abide in Him as the source of our spiritual life. Just as physical life is sustained by food, spiritual life is sustained by a relationship with Christ. In this way, Jesus is the bread of life, offering us not only spiritual sustenance but eternal life. His life-giving power comes from His perfect relationship with the Father, and when we partake in Him, we are also brought into a life-giving relationship with God. This verse reminds us that spiritual life does not come from our own efforts, but from receiving the life that Jesus offers, rooted in His obedience to the Father and His sacrifice for us.
1 Corinthians 11:24
This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.
Luke 22:20
And he took the cup, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.
John 6:53
Jesus answered, Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.
1 Corinthians 10:16
Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ.
