Knowledge rightly applied is a powerful tool for the wise. The tongue of the wise does not speak indiscriminately but uses knowledge “aright,” meaning that it is used thoughtfully and wisely. The wise person speaks truth, but they also apply that truth in ways that are beneficial and edifying. The mouth of fools, on the other hand, speaks recklessly, pouring out foolishness that causes harm and confusion. This verse encourages us to seek wisdom and to use our knowledge in ways that glorify God and serve others. Knowledge is a gift, but it must be tempered with wisdom and humility to be effective. It’s not enough to simply know the truth; we must also know how and when to speak it in ways that are loving, kind, and beneficial. The wise person is careful with their words, choosing to speak in ways that promote understanding, peace, and healing, rather than contributing to division or strife.
Proverbs 18:13
He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him.
Matthew 12:34
O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
Psalms 19:14
Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.
Psalms 141:3
Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips.
