This verse speaks to the harsh reality of being treated unjustly, especially when we have extended love and kindness to others. The psalmist laments the evil treatment received in return for good deeds, reflecting the frustration and heartbreak of unreciprocated love. When we love others, we expect love in return, but this verse acknowledges the painful reality that sometimes we face rejection and hatred instead. This can be especially difficult when we have poured our hearts into helping others, only to be met with hatred. Yet, this verse challenges us to respond to hatred with love, to remain steadfast in our commitment to love others regardless of how they treat us. It calls us to reflect the love of Christ, who, despite being rejected and despised, still extended grace and forgiveness. This verse invites us to trust God with the outcome, knowing that our love will not return void and that God sees our sacrifices.

1 Samuel 20:41
I am distressed, for you are very dear to me, my brother Jonathan.
Matthew 24:9
Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake.
